Chicago IQF 2009: Tiara QuiltArt Reception

Karey B welcomes us to the QuiltArt reception
The lovely tiara ladies
and the prize below if you were selected as a winner,
I did not win but was told I was the most royal looking.

Chicago IQF 2009, Painting on Fabric class with Judy Coates Perez

Here we are surrounding Ms. Perez as she shows us the wonders of fabric paint.
This is what the classroom looked like, it was a bit tight for 25 ladies, but we made do.
The first step, trace or draw the design on PFD fabric
and iron freezer paper to the pack for stability.
Then paint away.

Coming along...

Blending Art and Tradition, Genesee Valley Quilt Club

Here it is completed, I am very happy with the way it turned out.
This is for the Genesee Valley Quilt Club 2009 Challenge. For this challenge you were given a fat quarter of fabric, which is the fabric piece in the hands above. I painted it with Lumiere by Jaguard to add sparkle and free motion quilted it to accent the heart shape.
I then made the hands using InnerFuse and batting. I will paint in some shadows to add depth and they will come out from the border. It is my first three dimensional piece.

This is the picture the piece is based on, my hands handing over the tradition of quilting to my 4-year-old niece, Maya. The background represents traditional quilting and the piece in the hands represents art quilting, which is my chosen form of expression using fabric as paint.

Urban Decay

Here is the completed piece.

This is what I have so far. I am using Caran D'Ache neocolor watersoluble crayons.
Once it is finished I will thread paint it to accent the details.
Cropped image for piece.
Original picture.
Fragments: Urban Decay Challenge
The challenge is to help tell a piece of the Urban Decay story by documenting Urban
Decay with a photograph, then taking a portion of that photograph and creating a quilted
abbreviated image of that section in cloth, fiber and embellishments, reclaimed or new.

Heavenly Bodies

This was for a challenge called Hevenly Bodies, I call it, Cupcakes are Heavenly.

Latest Project

This is my latest project, It is based on the male figure used for the Hoffman Challenge, A Quiet place (39”x 38”), which is currently traveling.
This is the beginning stages of piecing it together using a piece of muslin over the sketch. I tried a new technique, instead of using Wonder Under I used Elmer's school glue. This piece is 48" x 36" in size, a little bigger that A quiet Place.

Close up of the head, I decided to not go with a green eye, I will be adding a brown eye which I plan to embellish with beads.
Here it is pinned and ready to start quilting...

Check out our Obama QUilt Exhibit book.

The ObamaQuilters are 60 fiber artists who formed a grassroots, all-volunteer, multi-ethnic group of quilters from all across America. We produced a vibrant quilt show, which was held at the Cafritz Art Center of Montgomery College in Maryland, from Feb. 9-March 5, 2009. This book is based on that show, and includes photos of the quilts, the quilters, and copies of the artist statements, which in many cases, are as moving as the quilts themselves.
We ObamaQuilters are excited to share our passion for art quilts and our gratitude for being alive to see the historic election of President Barach Obama come to pass.
