SOS interview

I was interviewed via phone about my Obama Equals Hope quilt for the President Obama: A Celebration in Art Quilts exhibit (at The Cafritz Arts Center , Maryland Feb. 9 -March 5, 2009) by Karen Musgrave.

It was such fun to talk to someone who was so interested in what you had to say about quilts and your art. If you have time, I suggest reading some of the other interviews, they are quite interesting. They have many big names on their list. You would be surprised to read about how they got started, what makes them tick, and what you have in common with them.

The Alliance For American Quilts Quilters' S.O.S. - Save Our Stories creates, through recorded interviews, a broadly accessible body of information concerning quiltmaking, both present-day and in living memory, for scholarship and exhibition. This grassroots project continually captures the voices and stories of quiltmakers and posts the transcribed.

What is going on in the quilt you might ask. Let me explain, I was reading Eckhart Tolle’s “New Earth” book and he talks a lot about in the book about this concept of “I am”. Like anything that happens to you in your life, you are just supposed to get to this point, that I could never get to, where you just feel like, “I am.” So if you are driving in traffic and it is frustrating, instead of getting frustrated, you are just supposed to be like, “I am.” That anything in life, like gossiping, or anything negative, you are supposed to go back to this concept of “I am” and just… you exist. That is it. “I am.” And I just couldn’t get this concept, and still struggle with it. I incorporated those letters into the quilt in big block letters. The left one said I AM, with a female figure incorporated into the design, and she sort of looks like she was struggling, she is painted over the white with the Luminar Sparkle paint. The right panel says, AM I and is a mirror image of the left.

The concept is that in life we are always asking ourselves, we might say, “ I am an artist” but, then there are days that are bad, and you might be like, “Am I an artist?” Or you are either like, “I am a good wife” or “I am a good friend” and there are other times when you are like, “Am I good friend? Am I a good wife?” So those questions that we constantly ask ourselves.
